About Blues for an Alabama Sky

Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley and Hamilton’s Giles Terera star in Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky at the National Theatre in autumn 2022. Blues for an Alabama Sky tickets are available on London Theatre now.

In 1920s New York, the Harlem Renaissance changed the lives of African American artists, creatives, and writers. Taking place during the ‘Roaring Twenties’ era, the New Negro Movement made room for greater social, cultural and political discussion and ways of thinking. But as the Wall Street Crash triggered the Great Depression, the Harlem Renaissance felt the bite of a everchanging world.

Blues for an Alabama Sky explores the fallout in 1930s New York through the eyes of four friends. They try to keep their artistic dreams alive, but when one of them, Angel, falls for an Alabama stranger, can the quartet stay together? Or will the realities of 1930s living take its toll?

Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky premiered in 1995, and the play immediately spoke to the nation. An excerpt of Blues for an Alabama Sky was staged during the 1996 Olympics opening ceremony in Atlanta, showcasing the work on a global scale.

Fast forward to 2022, and an all-star cast will take part in Blues for an Alabama Sky. Samira Wiley plays Angel Allen, joined by Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo as Delia, Osy Ikhile as Leland, Sule Rimi as Sam, and Giles Terera as Guy. Lynette Linton directs.

See it if If you like shows where you have to understand the deeper meaning behind the story. You like a contrast between comedy and deep topics

Don’t see it if You can’t pick up small details in a story like and you don’t like shows that are more emotional and deep

Elaborate Set!, Enthralling, Historic, Likeable Characters, Wonderful Cast!

See it if you want to see a great drama's humour explore decisions and their effects in Harlem during the Great Depression & modernisation.

Don’t see it if … There is no reason not to see it, however, it is a slow burn & runs at almost 3 hours.
