Fast forward to 2023, Noises Off celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a production at the Phoenix Theatre, followed by a second limited West End engagement at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Felicity Kendal, Jonathan Coy, and Alexander Hanson will all reprise their roles.
Noises Off inspired future comedy classics: The Play That Goes Wrong takes influence from the 1980s show; they both follow a hapless group who struggle through all the odds to put on a show. 2023 marks a great moment for British entertainment, with both shows playing at the same time. What is Noises Off about?
Noises Off follows the onstage and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they act out a fictional farce — Nothing On. In each of the three acts, audiences see the company at a different part of the show: the final rehearsals, backstage during the opening night in Weston-Super-Mare, and the last matinee in Ashton-Under-Lyme. As the cast and crew get closer during the tour, their relationships are tested to breaking point. Can the show go on?
