Visit the 'streets in the sky' where the lives of people across three decades intertwine: Rose and Harry yearn for the promised new life they've been seeking; Joy and Jimmy envision spending their remaining days together; and Poppy aspires to start a fresh life away from her London past.

Featuring songs from Sheffield-born singer-songwriter Richard Hawley, Standing At The Sky’s Edge had its world premiere at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre in 2019 to rave reviews. The musical transferred to the National’s Olivier Theatre in 2023, where it was awarded Best New Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations at the Olivier Awards. This highly anticipated new musical will play in London’s West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in 2024.

Robert Hastie directs Standing At The Sky’s Edge with a book by Chris Bush. Completing the creative team is set and costume designer Ben Stones, choreographer Lynne Page, music supervisor Tom Deering, lighting designer Mark Henderson, and sound designer Bobby Aitken.

Who is Richard Hawley?

Standing at the Sky’s Edge uses the songs of legendary Sheffield singer-songwriter Richard Hawley. Hawley's 2012 album, sharing the same name as the musical, was nominated for the 2012 Mercury Prize. The Pulp frontman and BRIT Award-nominated artist has collaborated with the likes of Manic Street Preachers, Elbow, and the Arctic Monkeys.

Clever, Delightful, Entertaining, Interesting, Thought Provoking

See it if You are interested in history as well as a good musical. It was sweet, moving and sad at times. Excellent acting and musical performance

Don’t see it if You want a "happy ever after" style musical

Great Writing, Masterful, Relevant, Romantic, Thought-Provoking

See it if you want a true, raw story about a part of British history that can often get overlooked as time progresses.

Don’t see it if You need the music to continue the plot of the story. As a jukebox musical, the songs didn’t carry the story forward, but I didn’t mind.

Absorbing, Clever, Delightful, Entertaining, Heartbreaking

See it if You love a good love story and a bit of history! The stage was used dynamically and the cast were great at evoking emotion.

Don’t see it if You're looking for pure comedy. The storyline is powerful and touches on many prevalent and still relevant issues that exist today.
