About The Spy Who Came In From The Cold

John le Carré’s novel, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, is brought to life onstage in a brand-new stage play debuting on the West End. Book The Spy Who Came In From The Cold tickets on London Theatre.

Set during the height of the Cold War, this story follows Alec Leamas, a British Intelligence officer who believes his years of service are nearing an end. Disillusioned and ready to “come in from the cold,” he is instead presented with an incredibly dangerous assignment, one that blurs the boundaries of what duty means. Sent undercover into East Germany, Leamas must manipulate a web of double agents and ever-changing allegiances, even as his growing relationship with Liz Gold, a librarian, threatens to undermine the entire mission.

Le Carré’s novel has remained a global bestseller for over six decades and was also named one of TIME Magazine’s All-Time 100 Novels. Its enduring legacy lies at its core: a spy thriller that breaks down the supposed heroism of espionage and reveals that underneath it all lie secrets, sacrifice, and most of all, betrayal.

This major West End premiere brings together playwright David Eldridge (Beginning, Middle) and acclaimed director Jeremy Herrin (A Mirror, People, Places and Things) for a one-of-a-kind tale of adventure.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold is a play which boasts a formidable cast, including Rory Keenan (Somewhere Boy, The Regime) as Alec Leamas, Agnes O’Casey (Black Doves) as Liz Gold, Gunnar Cauthery (Dear England) as Hans-Dieter Mundt, and Ian Drysdale (Firebrand) as Control.

In collaboration with this incredible cast is the talented creative team, including designer Max Jones, lighting designer Azusa Ono, composer Paul Englishby, and sound designer Elizabeth Purnell.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold in London promises a theatrical experience as chilling as the novel itself.
