Step inside a glamorous Manhattan apartment for The Assembled Parties, Pulitzer Prize nominee Richard Greenberg's (Three Days of Rain, Take Me Out) critically acclaimed Broadway hit, making its long-awaited London debut. Book The Assembled Parties tickets on London Theatre.
It's Christmas in 1980 when former teen movie star Julie Bascov insists on celebrating the holiday, despite her family's ever-present reminders that they are, in fact, Jewish. Alongside her husband, Ben, Julie hosts a lavish Christmas feast in their apartment, which overlooks Central Park West. Their son, Scotty, comes home from Harvard with his best friend Jeff, who is taken by the Bascov's glamour, seeming generosity, and sophistication.
However, when Jeff returns to the very same occasion twenty years later, in 2000, he finds that the household has changed dramatically. The family's world has turned upside down, and old secrets have surfaced, time has changed relationships, and the weight of loss permeates the air.
The Assembled Parties is a play that was a smashing Broadway hit when it premiered in 2013, having been extended three times due to overwhelming success and demand. Greenberg's writing is equal parts witty and human; it captures both the fondness and the melancholy that exist within family dynamics
This London premiere is directed by Blanche McIntyre (The Invention of Love, Letters from Max) and stars Tracy-Ann Oberman (The Merchant of Venice 1936, EastEnders) alongside Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein, Friends With Kids), who is also making her London theatre debut.
Audiences should not miss the opportunity to see one of America's finest contemporary playwrights brought to life on the London stage for the first time. With its sharp humour, layers of emotional depth, and beautifully drawn characters, The Assembled Parties is a play that reminds us of the waxing and waning that comes with the passing of time.
