Agatha Christie didn’t think much of *The Mousetrap* when it first opened though. Christie originally wrote the play for radio, and it later became a play, that at the time, Christie thought would only run for around 8 months. *The Mousetrap* play was written as a gift for Queen Mary’s 80th birthday in 1947. Agatha Christie then gave her grandson, Mathew Pritchard, the rights to the play for his ninth birthday.

And in The Play That Goes Wrong, we're here to prick the pomposities and artifice of theatre yet again in a bustling portrait of an amateur dramatic company from Cornley Polytechnic, as they attempt to put on a 1920s murder thriller called Murder at Haversham Manor.The result is far, far funnier than <a href="/show/the-mousetrap">The Mousetrap</a> ever was and that's now in its 62nd year, so I think that its creators Mischief Theatre - a group of graduates from LAMDA who began as an impro comedy troupe - may have a substantial little hit on their hands, built on the shifting sands of its own insubstantiality.It's a beautiful theatrical paradox, and that it should have now come all the way to the West End from humble beginnings in the upstairs room of the <a href="/theatres/old-red-lion-theatre">Old Red Lion pub theatre</a> the Christmas before last is also a genuine thrill. The underdog can triumph - even if their dog called Winston has gone missing (and instead has to be represented here only by his lead).Everything that can go wrong, it seems, does go wrong for this play, its players and particularly its wobbly, fragile set. But the more it does, of course, the funnier it becomes. It's divinely daft, gloriously preposterous and utterly silly. But it's also not for everyone: anyone with slightly more sophisticated comedy palettes may baulk at the relentlessness of it all.Yet I also think you cannot fail to admire the ceaseless energy of the cast or the wildly caricatured yet minutely detailed comedy performances they deliver. Just to watch co-author Henry Shields's face, crossing from bafflement to wide-eyed pleasure at how he's managed to cover yet another gaffe is priceless.He's one of a terrific ensemble of young actors who give it impeccable timing and daring physical energy. The Duchess Theatre, located in London's West End, is a charming, intimate venue renowned for hosting a variety of entertainment spanning over nine decades. The theatre's history is full of plays and performances that range from comedy to drama, musicals to one-man-shows. Characterised by its wonderfully unique Art Deco style, the Duchess Theatre's current facade and auditorium date back to 1929 when it was designed by architect Ewen Barr. Agatha Christie wrote *Witness for the Prosecution* in 1925. The original story was published in Flynn’s, a weekly detective magazine circulated in early 20th-century Britain.

I can safely say that that was the only first night I have enjoyed… It was one of my plays that I like best myself.” We'd like to think that the *Witness for the Prosecution* West End production would be loved by Christie too. 

It’s even more impressive that *Witness for the Prosecution* performances occur in a real court. London County Hall opened on 17 Jul. 1922, and served as the headquarters of local government for London for 64 years. When you’re watching the show, you’ll see the octagonal Council Chamber at the centre of County Hall — it once provided seating for over 200 council members and four galleries overlooking the Chamber for the public and members of the press. Fawlty Towers - The Play LT Override

Comedy legend John Cleese brings a stage adaptation of *Fawlty Towers* to the West End this summer, based on the episodes “The Hotel Inspectors”, “Communication Problems”, and “ The Germans”. Basil and Sybil Fawlty are played by Adam Jackson-Smith and Anna-Jane Casey, with Hemi Yeroham as Manuel and Victoria Fox as Polly. Caroline Jay Ranger directs. 

The production is based on three of the 12-part series’ most popular episodes: “The Hotel Inspectors” (in which Basil goes berserk trying to work out which guest is there undercover) “Communication Problems” (in which Basil meets his match in imperious, hearing-impaired guest Mrs Richards) and “The Germans” (no introduction necessary). Prepare to laugh your socks off, but don’t mention the war!

Adam Jackson-Smith (*The Girl on the Train, The 39 Steps*) plays Cleese’s role of the snobbish, misanthropic Basil. Anna-Jane Casey (*Cabaret, Billy Elliot*) adopts Prunella Scales’s perm as Basil’s more level-headed but nosey wife Sybil. They are joined by Hemi Yeroham (*La Cage aux Folles*) as lovable Spanish waiter Manuel (originally played by the unforgettable Andrew Sachs) and Victoria Fox as sensible chambermaid Polly (co-creator Connie Booth’s role). The supporting cast includes Paul Nicholas (*Just Good Friends*) as the gaffe-prone long-term resident The Major, and Rachel Izen (*Funny Girl*) as Mrs Richards.

The production is directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, whose talent for comedy has previously been showcased in *Only Fools and Horses – The Musical*, *Steve Coogan Live*, and Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse’s *Legends Live Tour.*

## What to watch for
- Only 12 episodes of *Fawlty Towers* were made as Cleese and Booth were perfectionists who didn’t want the show to dilute in quality, with each scene undergoing an intense editing process. It’s fair to say that every episode has become a classic. 
- *Fawlty Towers* is more than a comedy classic—in 2000, a British Film Institute poll voted it the best British TV programme of all time.
- Basil Fawlty is based on Donald Sinclair, the proprietor of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay where Cleese and the *Monty Python* troupe stayed in 1970s. Cleese described Sinclair as “the rudest man I've ever come across in my life.”
- Cleese made guest appearances in American sitcoms *3rd Rock from the Sun* and *Cheers*, both of which cite *Fawlty Towers* as an influence on their depiction of dysfunctional workplace “families.”
- Cleese reprised his role as Basil in 2006 in an unofficial England 2006 World Cup song "Don't Mention the World Cup.”

The Apollo Theatre opened on 21 Feb. 1901. The theatre is named after the Greek god of the arts, and was built to house musical theatre productions.

During a performance of the Olivier Award winning play [*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time) on 19 Dec. 2013, a large section of the ceiling collapsed, potentially caused by the heavy rain London had experienced that week, and 88 people were injured.

## Apollo Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. The Stalls seats offer excellent views of the stage. Views in the outer seats are hindered by the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle seats may offer little legroom and little raking in the seating. The last two rows of seats sit on a higher level and offer better views than those in front.

The Grand Circle has a shallow ranke. The last two rows of seats are also built up higher.

Transferring to the West End from a Tony-winning run on Broadway (it became the most Tony-nominated play of all time), *Stereophonic* follows the pain and ecstasy of a band creating their first hit album. Original cast members Andrew R Butler, Eli Gelb, and Chris Stack also transfer to make their London stage debuts.
