The West End seems like an even brighter place when there’s a bit of Sondheim being performed. The National Theatre’s staging of the great composer’s final work and long-running passion project, *Here We Are*, is very stylish and dripping in social satire. Inspired by the films *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* and *The Exterminating Angel* by Spanish-Mexican filmmaker, Luis Buñuel, it starts with a group of one-percenters doing the world’s most unsatisfying restaurant crawl. They then move on to one character’s residence, where they become trapped while the world around them falls apart. There’s a lot to unpack, but Sondheim’s score makes it a delightful journey.

Stephen Sondheim's posthumously produced surrealist musical, *Here We Are*, based on two of Luis Buñuel's films, comes to the National Theatre for its UK premiere.  Book *Here We Are* tickets on London Theatre. 

*Here We Are* tells the story of a wealthy couple, Leo and Marianne Brink, who take their friends out for a meal at a highly-reviewed restaurant. However, it quickly becomes clear that things aren't as they seem. Act One is based on Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel's *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie*, in which upper-class friends cannot get any food to eat. Act Two is based on Buñuel's film, *The Exterminating Angel*, in which the wealthy friends have made it to the dinner but cannot leave. 

The star-studded cast includes Tony winners Jesse Tyler Ferguson (*Take Me Out*), Jane Krakowski (*She Loves Me*), and Paulo Szot (*& Juliet*). Off-Broadway cast members reprising their roles in the production include Tracie Bennett and Denis O'Hare. Rory Kinnear and Richard Fleeshman are also members of this exceptional cast. 

*Here We Are* is a musical that Sondheim worked on for almost a decade before his death in 2021. The musical's book is by Tony Award-nominee David Ives (*All in the Timing, Venus in Fur*). In 2023, it had its world premiere at The Shed Off-Broadway in New York City. 

The New York production was met with high praise, including [Vulture's review](https://www.vulture.com/2023/10/theater-review-sondheim-here-we-are.html), which said, "What a thrill to hear the unmistakable syncopations, the spikes and leaps and the intermittent yearning silkiness of this music, one last first time." 

This show boasts an excellent creative team, many of whom were on the original staging in 2023. Rory Kinnear was born in London in 1978. After studying English at Balliol College, Oxford, he studied acting at LAMDA.&nbsp;

He will next star in Stephen Sondheim's final musical *Here We Are* at the National Theatre.

Kinnear has performed many acclaimed roles in theatre, including&nbsp;Laeres and Hamlet in&nbsp;Hamlet,&nbsp;Angelo in Measure for Measure&nbsp;and&nbsp;an Oliver Award-winning performance in&nbsp;The Man of Mode&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href="/theatres/national-theatre">National Theatre</a>. At the National, he's also starred in&nbsp;The Revenger’s Tragedy, Philistines,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the theatre adaption of Burnt By the Sun, playing Mitia. In 2013, Kinnear won the Evening Standard's&nbsp;Best Actor Award for the second time for his title role in Othello,&nbsp;also winning an Olivier.

Kinnear is also well known for his portrayal of Bill Tanner in the James Bond film series alongside Daniel Craig, in Quantum of Solace,&nbsp;Skyfall&nbsp;and Spectre.&nbsp;He has also appeared in blockbusters such as The Imitation Game&nbsp;and the TV show Southcliffe.

Kinnear returned&nbsp;to the West End in The Threepenny Opera as Macheath at the Olivier Theatre&nbsp;in 2016. The following year, he played Karl Marx in&nbsp;Young Marx, which was the inaugural production&nbsp;at the <a href="/theatres/the-bridge-theatre">Bridge Theatre</a>. He also starred in Rufus Norris' production of Macbeth at the National Theatre alongside <a href="/actor-profile/anne-marie-duff">Anne-Marie Duff</a> in spring 2018. Richard Fleeshman will star in Stephen Sondheim's final musical *Here We Are* at the National Theatre.

He is an established West End and Broadway performer, having starred in *Legally Blonde* as Warner and *Ghost* as Sam Wheat, alongside Caissie Levy as Molly and Sharon D Clarke as Oda Mae Brown.

On screen, he has appeared in *The Sandman* and *Call the Midwife*, with his breakthrough role being in *Coronation Street* as a teenager.

Tracie Bennett was born in Lancashire in 1961. She then moved to London to train at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.&nbsp;

Bennett will next be seen in Stephen Sondheim's final musical *Here We Are* at the National Theatre.

Bennett’s theatre career began at the <a href="/theatres/savoy-theatre">Savoy Theatre</a> in 1994, appearing in She Loves Me&nbsp;and winning an Olivier&nbsp;Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. She later appeared in the Olivier award-winning show, Honk!, playing the role of Ida. In 2003 she was nominated for another Olivier Award for her performance in High Society.

Her success continued in her 2005 performance as Irma Brookes in Sex, Chips and Rock ‘n’ Roll at Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. She returned to the West End in 2006 in the London production of *Les Miserables*, playing the role of Madame Thenardier. The following year she took on the role of Velma Von Tussle in the West End premiere of Hairspray at the&nbsp;<a href="/theatres/shaftesbury-theatre">Shaftesbury Theatre</a>, winning her second Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical.

Bennett then played Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow, which premiered at Northmapton’s Royal Theatre and then was transferred to the West End. The show then transferred again, this time to Broadway in 2012, where she received a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play.

As well as theatre, Bennett is also well known for her roles in television, namely her various roles in Casualty, Next of Kin, Joking Apart, Burn It and New Tricks. Her most known television role was as Sharon Gaskell in Coronation Street from 1982 to 1999, filming 173 episodes.

In 2016, Bennett returned to the West End, playing Laura Henderson in *Mrs. Henderson Presents* at the <a href="/theatres/noel-coward-theatre">Noel Coward Theatre</a>. Bennett was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical at the Olivier Awards, but the show didn't enjoy critical success, running for just four months. She then played Carlotta in *Follies* at the <a href="/actor-profile/national-theatre">National Theatre</a>, alongside <a href="/actor-profile/imelda-staunton">Imelda Staunton</a>.

In 2023, Bennett will play J. B. Biggley in *How to Succeed Without Really Trying* at Southwark Playhouse Borough.

The <a href="/theatres/the-bridge-theatre">Bridge</a> is billing its new production of <a href="/show/a-midsummer-nights-dream-bridge-theatre">A Midsummer Night's Dream</a> as immersive, but in fact it's just old-fashioned promenade for the groundlings in the pit, who mill around or are shunted about a bit as the actors appear on various platforms that rise and descend around them, mostly containing variations of beds, or occasionally take to the air on bungee-like circus trapezes. The rest of the audience is seated in galleries around the full perimeter of the playing space.This is hardly as radical as it seems to want to position itself, but director Nick Hytner (a co-founder of the <a href="/theatres/the-bridge-theatre">Bridge</a>) is a past master at accessible contemporary Shakespeare, and as with his similarly promenade Julius Caesar at this address last year, he and his fellow creative team of designers from that production keep the show fast and fluid, fun and occasionally surprising.Though Gwendoline Christie (best known for TV's Games of Thrones, in which she played the warrior Brienne of Tarth) is the "star" attraction - and takes the star position of silently standing in a glass-encased box as the audience files in - this is very much an ensemble show, with diverse casting to the fore.This makes the aesthetic more like a show out of Emma Rice's tenure at the Globe, where she staged an irreverent, crowd-pleasing version of Dream in 2016. This production, which has movement direction by Arlene Phillips, comes complete with&nbsp;Beyoncé's Love on Top played at the end as a giant bouncy ball is flung around the auditorium that reminded me of Slava's Snowshow.So even some of its most novel-seeming aspects feel a bit second-hand. Still, there are still some innovative touches, like having Oberon and not Titania fall for Hammed Animashaun's Bottom when he is transformed into a donkey.Oliver Chris and David Moorst undergo more sprightly transformations as Theseus/Oberon and Puck respectively, with a bare-chested Chris finding a sexual charge in his seduction by Bottom and Moorst bringing a playful energy to Puck as he hangs upside down from the bungee rope.You hardly need to wait ages for a production of this play to come around in London, but a second one is about to open at Regent's Park's Open Air Theatre, where the forest glade-like setting will provide its own sense of immersive theatre rather than the rather forced one here. &nbsp;The production will also be broadcast to over 700 UK cinemas on October 17th, where the cameras will no doubt take audiences into the heart of the action as a gallery seat doesn't. *Hercules* in London has an excellent development team that has been working on the musical for years. The lyrics are by Tony Award-winning David Zippel (*City of Angels*), and the music is by EGOT Award-winning Alan Menken, who has also written the music for numerous Disney films, including *Beauty and the Beast* and *Aladdin*. The musical's book is by Olivier Award nominee Kwame Kwei-Armah (*Elmina's Kitchen*) and Tony Award winner Robert Horn (*Tootsie*). 

The musical is directed by Casey Nicholaw, who is no stranger to directing Disney stage adaptations. He directed the Broadway version of *Aladdin*. Nicholaw has also earned Tony Awards for directing *The Book of Mormon* and for his choreography of *Some Like It Hot*.

- Perhaps the most popular song from the musical and film, *Go The Distance*, was nominated for a 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
- Alan Menken wrote the music for *Hercules*, and David Zippel wrote the lyrics; both also wrote the music and lyrics for the original *Hercules* film. 
- Alan Menken is the second most prolific Academy Award winner in the music categories, with eight Oscars. 
- *Hercules*, the film, was followed by a Disney television series called *Hercules: The Animated Series*.

*Hercules* premiered Off-Broadway in 2019 at Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Manhattan, New York. It then ran at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in 2023, and in 2024, the show opened in Hamburg, Germany.
