*Hercules* in London has an excellent development team that has been working on the musical for years. The lyrics are by Tony Award-winning David Zippel (*City of Angels*), and the music is by EGOT Award-winning Alan Menken, who has also written the music for numerous Disney films, including *Beauty and the Beast* and *Aladdin*. The musical's book is by Olivier Award nominee Kwame Kwei-Armah (*Elmina's Kitchen*) and Tony Award winner Robert Horn (*Tootsie*). 

The musical is directed by Casey Nicholaw, who is no stranger to directing Disney stage adaptations. He directed the Broadway version of *Aladdin*. Nicholaw has also earned Tony Awards for directing *The Book of Mormon* and for his choreography of *Some Like It Hot*.

- Perhaps the most popular song from the musical and film, *Go The Distance*, was nominated for a 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
- Alan Menken wrote the music for *Hercules*, and David Zippel wrote the lyrics; both also wrote the music and lyrics for the original *Hercules* film. 
- Alan Menken is the second most prolific Academy Award winner in the music categories, with eight Oscars.

This musical comedy tells the tale of Hercules, the son of Zeus and Hera, who grows up on Earth after Hades makes him mortal. However, Hercules is still left with super strength and spends his life feeling like he doesn’t belong. When he discovers that he is a demigod, he seeks to become a hero to return to Mount Olympus. 

*Hercules* in London includes audience-favourite songs from the film, including *Go The Distance*, which was nominated for a 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Other songs included are *From Zero to Hero*, and *I Won’t Say I’m in Love*. 

This show has been years in the making. In 2017, Alan Menken announced he was working on the music for a stage version of *Hercules*. Since then, the production has been created by numerous talented individuals, including Olivier Award nominee Kwame Kwei-Armah and Tony Award winner Robert Horn, who wrote the musical book. 

*Hercules* premiered Off-Broadway in 2019 at Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Manhattan, New York. It then ran at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in 2023, and in 2024, the show opened in Hamburg, Germany.

Comedy legend John Cleese brings a stage adaptation of *Fawlty Towers* to the West End this summer, based on the episodes “The Hotel Inspectors”, “Communication Problems”, and “ The Germans”. Basil and Sybil Fawlty are played by Adam Jackson-Smith and Anna-Jane Casey, with Hemi Yeroham as Manuel and Victoria Fox as Polly. Caroline Jay Ranger directs. 

The production is based on three of the 12-part series’ most popular episodes: “The Hotel Inspectors” (in which Basil goes berserk trying to work out which guest is there undercover) “Communication Problems” (in which Basil meets his match in imperious, hearing-impaired guest Mrs Richards) and “The Germans” (no introduction necessary). Prepare to laugh your socks off, but don’t mention the war!

Adam Jackson-Smith (*The Girl on the Train, The 39 Steps*) plays Cleese’s role of the snobbish, misanthropic Basil. Anna-Jane Casey (*Cabaret, Billy Elliot*) adopts Prunella Scales’s perm as Basil’s more level-headed but nosey wife Sybil. They are joined by Hemi Yeroham (*La Cage aux Folles*) as lovable Spanish waiter Manuel (originally played by the unforgettable Andrew Sachs) and Victoria Fox as sensible chambermaid Polly (co-creator Connie Booth’s role). The supporting cast includes Paul Nicholas (*Just Good Friends*) as the gaffe-prone long-term resident The Major, and Rachel Izen (*Funny Girl*) as Mrs Richards.

- Only 12 episodes of *Fawlty Towers* were made as Cleese and Booth were perfectionists who didn’t want the show to dilute in quality, with each scene undergoing an intense editing process. It’s fair to say that every episode has become a classic. 
- *Fawlty Towers* is more than a comedy classic—in 2000, a British Film Institute poll voted it the best British TV programme of all time.
- Basil Fawlty is based on Donald Sinclair, the proprietor of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay where Cleese and the *Monty Python* troupe stayed in 1970s. Cleese described Sinclair as “the rudest man I've ever come across in my life.”
- Cleese made guest appearances in American sitcoms *3rd Rock from the Sun* and *Cheers*, both of which cite *Fawlty Towers* as an influence on their depiction of dysfunctional workplace “families.”
- Cleese reprised his role as Basil in 2006 in an unofficial England 2006 World Cup song "Don't Mention the World Cup.”

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. The Stalls seats offer excellent views of the stage. Views in the outer seats are hindered by the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle seats may offer little legroom and little raking in the seating. The last two rows of seats sit on a higher level and offer better views than those in front.

The Grand Circle has a shallow ranke. The last two rows of seats are also built up higher.

*Titanique* is a musical that combines the blockbuster film, *Titanic*, with the music of Céline Dion to create an unforgettable laugh-out-loud show. The show begins when Céline Dion takes over a tour of the Titanic museum, claiming to have survived the infamous crash and insisting on telling the story of what really happened that night. 

The show premiered Off-Broadway in June of 2022 at Asylum Theatre, and in November of 2022, it had its Broadway transfer to Daryl Roth Theatre. The musical was an immediate hit, earning three 2023 Lucille Lortel Awards, including for Outstanding Musical.

### What is *Tina - The Tina Turner Musical* about? 

Born as Anna Mae Bullock on 26 Nov. 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, the recording artist shot to fame in the mid-1950s singing with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. She originally went under the name "Little Ann”, but in 1960, Ike Turner gave her the moniker “Tina Turner.” The musical charts Tina's life away from the public eye too, notably how Tina split from Ike Turner in 1976 after being a victim of domestic abuse. Nowadays, Tina Turner lives in Küsnacht, Switzerland.

If you drew up a list of everything you wanted from a <a href="/actor-profile/tina-turner">Tina Turner </a>musical, you wouldn't be disappointed by <a href="/show/tina-the-musical">Tina</a>, which gets its world premiere at the <a href="/theatres/aldwych-theatre">Aldwych Theatre</a>. It's got the anthems, it's got the moves, it's got the hair. But on a deep-dive into the life of one of the world's best-selling recording artists, we witness some of the moments of genuine turmoil she's had to endure on her way to stardom.Born Anna Mae Bullock, the young Turner grew up in the small Tennessee town of Nutbush, whose Black residents were expected to stick to picking cotton and keep to themselves. Her first experience of violence is over the kitchen table as her father beats her mother. It draws gasps from the audience who may have bought tickets solely expecting a jaunty musical, but also provides a harrowing insight into the life that lies ahead.Anna Mae was discovered by Ike Turner, who put her centre stage leading his band alongside him. He made her change her name to Tina Turner, and made her his wife. Tina became embroiled in Ike's life: he would beat her for seeing men before they were married, for not performing the music in his vision. And it's pretty brutal stuff.The second half focusses much more on Turner's music: working with Beatles producer Phil Spector; finding her rock 'n' roll mojo; facing record labels who would only have one Black woman on their books. Her impersonations of Turner are pretty spot-on, from her low-smooth tones to iconic howls - best demonstrated in a scene in the recording studio where Ike pushes the singer to go higher and higher. She's got the moves too, imitating Turner's distinctive moves and during the finale, transporting us from the Aldwych to the 180,000 capacity Maracana Stadium; from a musical to a rock concert.&nbsp;As you would expect, Tina is constantly at the centre of this story. Katori Hall's book does tackle the issues head-on, it covers racism in the Deep South, adversity in the music industry, and relationships of domestic abuse - all very current issues too. The only respite comes in the music.&nbsp;The whole show has more of a rock musical vibe than I expected. Many scenes begin on stage or at a recording session, giving us full-power renditions of "River Deep. Mountain High" and "The Best" (which is a pretty high-octane finale that drew the audience to its feet). &nbsp;But a highlight could be act two opener "Private Dancer", as Tina struggles to cope after Ike uses copyright to stop her from performing any of the songs they worked on together.Phyllida Lloyd's staging includes the extensive use of video as a backdrop which works well to transport us from rainy London ("I Can't Stand the Rain") to trippy, colourful scenes like "Higher". The choreography is some of the most giddy and energetic in the West End (the faster the better) and while Warren's spot-on as Turner, the speed means it's noticeable if one dancer is a touch out of time.<a href="/theatre-news/interviews/kobna-holdbrook-smith-interview-work-hard-tina-ike-turner-musical">Kobna Holdbrook-Smith</a>, performing in a musical for the first time, plays the villainous Ike with ferocity, though it is slightly grating that the character can hardly go one song without grabbing a guitar.It's everything you expected, executed well and packs in a few surprises.
