ABBA stormed onto the global music scene when the group won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with their single 'Waterloo,' which became their first number-one single in the UK. To create the avatars (known as ABBAtars), all four original band members wore motion-capture suits and performed the twenty-song set. Industrial Light & Magic, the motion picture visual effects company behind Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, designed the graphics for the *ABBA Voyage* concert.

No concert was anticipated quite like [*ABBA Voyage*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/25118-abba-voyage-tickets). The possibility to see the iconic Swedish band on stage once more, not only together again, but appearing as their younger selves, boggled everyone’s minds. But can these ABBA-tars (a colloquial way to describe the quartet’s holograms) entertain audiences as much as seeing the real deal in the flesh?

To put simply, yes. *ABBA Voyage* is a concert for the ages. Over five weeks, 1,000 animators immortalised Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson, and Björn Ulvaeus into state-of-the-art digital forms. Add in visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic — the brains behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and the end result is sublime, defining the phrase "needs to be seen to be believed." 

ABBA are no longer four performers; they’re ethereal beings bounced in from another world, materialising on a 65-metre screen. These highly-rendered beings may not look and feel entirely human: glossy, vacant eyes; a constant beaming smile; and swishing hair can feel disorienting and take a few minutes to get used to. 

But it's impossible to take your eyes off them. When there’s a chance to see ABBA “live” and experience the musical euphoria of generations past, it’s easy to forgive any odd appearances. There’s no denying that the Swedish superstars are in the room. 

It’s a slow buildup, as the lesser-radio-played “The Visitors” and “Hole in Your Soul” kick off proceedings. Once the crowdpleasers start, the pop-fuelled rollercoaster begins and gets everyone up on their feet. Even the slower-paced songs like “Chiquitita” leave the audience waving, clapping, and stomping their feet. 

There’s a 10-piece live band too, including Britpop artists James Righton, of Klaxons fame, and the chart-topping DJ Little Boots (Victoria Hesketh) on keyboards, marrying ABBA and live music. By the time “The Winner Takes It All" hits its crescendo, the audience’s energy could solely power the ABBA Arena’s 291-speaker surround sound system. 

It’s not just the music we should thank ABBA for. Matthieu Debay’s futuristic lights and laser shows transform the arena into a disco rave, and when there’s a break to keep up the illusion ABBA are in the building, Shynola’s two short animations following a hero as they find the band’s legend lift the "Voyage" theme into the stratosphere.

There are a few glaring omissions in the setlist, but with producers confirming additional songs were filmed for the concert, it’s only a matter of time before *ABBA Voyage* changes its course.

Once again, the septuagenerians find themselves leading the music industry in a format that is surely beyond the band’s wildest dreams back when they won Eurovision in 1974. With the flat-pack, purpose-built ABBA Arena’s ability to move around the world, this is a concert that can live on forevermore. *ABBA Voyage* - douze points.

ABBA Voyage is the long-awaited concert from one of the biggest pop acts of all time. Featuring a setlist of hit songs, see ABBA’s avatars accompanied by a 10-piece live band, at the custom-built ABBA Arena in London. The ABBA Arena holds 3,000 audience members per performance.

[The Tower Bridge](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/27806-tower-bridge-tickets) is one of London’s most famous landmarks. The 13-metre-tall bridge has two sections called bascules, which rise for vessels below approximately 800 times each year.

Horace Jones designed and John Wolfe Barry engineered London’s Tower Bridge in the late 1800s. The complexity of this design, with its two pedestrian walkways, movable roadways that lift to let ships pass through, and namesake towers, meant the structure took almost a decade to complete. 

Since then, millions have driven or walked over it, and a lucky few have gotten an inside look at its mechanics and inner workings. Tower Bridge was initially created to provide further access to the East End of London. Still, today its purpose has expanded: it attracts visitors worldwide to take in this architectural marvel.

Go where few commuters ever do, and see in the engine rooms how the structure was built and what makes it an architectural feat decades and decades after its initial construction. A few bridges this famous also raise themselves to let ships pass, making Tower Bridge a locomotive spectacle.

## What to Watch For

- Since 1982, Tower Bridge Exhibition has told the bridge's history and why it came into existence.
Visitors can also experience the exciting new glass floor and spectacular panoramic views from the high-level Walkways and the Victorian engine rooms, which house the beautiful steam engines that once powered the bridge lifts.
- Fifty designs were rejected before the right one was greenlit. In 1877, Sir Albert Joseph Altman formed a special committee to begin the bridge-building process; more than 50 designs were submitted. A design was not approved for eight years when it was decided to build a bascule bridge.

The husband-and-wife team of Julia Barfield and David Marks of the firm Marks Barfield Architects designed the London Eye, which won the Institution of Structural Engineers Special Award in 2001, the year after the first passenger rode this famed Ferris wheel. Initially, the London Eye was intended to be a temporary attraction with a five-year lease, but immense popularity continued to attract visitors. Today, tens of millions of people have ridden this London icon.

Each passenger capsule, 32 in total, weighs ten tons and can carry 25 passengers. (Don’t worry, the capsules are numbered 1–33, with 13 being left out for superstitious reasons.) A must-see while in London, the Eye lets you experience the city with jaw-dropping views.

This cantilevered observation wheel sits on the South Bank of the Thames River, steps from the Golden Jubilee Bridge, National Theatre, and other hot destinations. However, what you’ll see on this one-of-a-kind ride will reach much farther than those tourist hubs: on a clear day, visitors can take in views more than two dozen miles away. Official royal residence of King Charles III, Buckingham Palace should be at the top of any visitor’s trip to London — whether you’re a monarchist or not! The time-honoured tradition of the Changing of the Guard, also known as the Guard Mounting, marks the shift change of soldiers and is a quintessential London experience. The 45-minute ceremony happens between Buckingham Palace, St. James's Palace, and Wellington Barracks. Typically, the Regimental Band of Corps of Drums provides musical support for the ceremony. Onlookers can enjoy the ceremony free of charge. (The days of the Changing of the Guard vary from season to season, so be sure to check the schedule ahead of time.) 

Visitors can now step inside Buckingham Palace's 19 magnificent State Rooms, which provide the setting for ceremonial occasions and official entertaining by members of the Royal Family. They can also experience a new exhibition celebrating the Edwardian age in The King’s Gallery, which houses one of the largest and most important art collections in the world.
